TENEMENT JAZZ BAND

Tenement Jazz band are a traditional jazz band formed in early 2018 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Brought together by their shared love of New Orleans music, and comprising musicians from various corners of Edinburgh’s vibrant jazz scene, they are on a journey of exploration back to the roots of the music that they play.

Their aims are to capture the raw energy and excitement of the early jazz recordings, to find and revive lesser-heard songs and cultivate their own interpretations of these, all in order to captivate experienced jazzers, dancing persons, and uninitiated ears alike.

In their brief existence so far they have performed at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow Jazz Festivals, collaborated with various musicians via their own Cellar Session residency, become regulars at swing dancing and lindy-hop events through-out Scotland, and performed their own sell-out hit show on the Edinburgh Fringe telling the story of the 'Red Hot Roots of Jazz' from turn of the century New Orleans and beyond. Their debut EP 'New Orleans Wiggle' has been a fast-selling hit, and this winter the band have travelled off the mainland, out the Norway's Fjellrocken festival and the Lagavulin Islay jazz festival.

2019 will take the band over Hadrian's Wall, and off on tour throughout the UK to bring their music to audiences across the country. Catch them while you can!

“An unexpected treat are the Tenement Jazz Band at Icehouse Jazz and Blues bar. Their crisp banjo solos and air of exuberance get everyone dancing, young and old.“ - The Wee Review (Belladrum Festival 2018)
“ A band of excellent players, this event was terrific fun in the relaxed, speak-easy atmosphere of the Jazz Bar.” - Eileen Reid, The Scottish Review (Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018)
