Led by Craig Hanson, some of the finest musicians on Manchester’s music scene are tonight’s house band. These fantastic individuals have come together through their love of creating innovative original music, and celebrating the forerunners from throughout history who harnessed their talent and musical conceptualisation to develop groundbreaking approaches to making music. Today, these artists are high-ranking inspiration for countless up-and-coming musicians, but the attitude held by those legends continues to pulse through the music scene.

It is this focus on the creation of music, in its most wonderful and broad approaches, which defines the Melody Makers Jam. This is a unique opportunity to get involved with like-minded creatives. Maybe you’ve got a particular tune in mind; or think that one classic would sound great arranged a different way; perhaps, even, you and a mate have been working on a track together but would love to hear what it sounds like on brass… The options couldn’t be more open, and you couldn’t hope for a higher calibre house band and more supportive audience to get things going.

When we spoke to Craig about hosting this Jam Night, he advocated a Jam based on music from the worlds of modern alternative pop, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, soul and great songwriting. Think artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to Jill Scott, Bjork to Beyonce, Kate Bush to Kendrick Lamar… Sound like your cup of tea? Bring along your instruments and vocal cords, have a chat with Craig and the band, and lets make some music.

More of a listener than a player? Book yourself a table and watch the night unfold, it’s fair to say absolutely anything could happen. One thing’s for sure, with this band and this vision, it’s going to be a good one.

A little on Melody Makers Jam leader, Craig Hanson:

Craig is an acclaimed musician on the Manchester scene. He performs and tours with many artists including 6x Grammy Nominated artist Yola. He was one half of spiritual funk jazz duo Skeltr, winning various awards and releasing two successful records. Craig is now working behind the scenes on his own brand new project (all to be revealed)…

An exuberant jazz-funk-folk collective hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, Fat-Suit have captured the attention of jazzers, folkies, prog-rockers and ravers alike. The 20-something musicians featured within their ranks make up the backbone of the current Scottish music scene. They embrace a seamless mix of musical styles, with the priority being to evoke maximum joy through energetic live performance.

'Waifs & Strays' is the band's 4th album and follow-up to 2017's Scottish Jazz Album of the Year 'Atlas'. Recorded and filmed live in Drygate Brewery in Glasgow over 4 days, the album features the huge ensemble's signature blend of modern jazz, folk, electronica, rock/pop and everything in between.

The sheer power of the band is felt on tracks such as Keo, while the relentless energy of Brum Doing a Wheelie showcases their fun side. They open up to their softer influences on the folk-infused Countryside Quiet, and tread new ground entirely with the spacey and meditative Lunar Milk.

Nominated for the SAY (Scottish Album of the Year) Award 2020. Nominated for Best Album at the 2020 Scottish Jazz Awards.

Their follow up EP ‘Strand’, recorded in the same session as Waifs & Strays, was released in summer 2020 and across 3 tracks again showcased the band’s diversity, stepping into the worlds of pastoral folk, sweeping orchestral jazz and jam-band fusion.

Influence of the modern jazz greats combine with noughties indie guitar riffs, 90s dance sounds, and timeless groove and funk. Their softer side opens up to folk melodies with celtic roots.

The Neil C. Young Trio are "full of soul and energy" which "touches your heart and sets your hair on fire!" so says, Critical Jazz.com and Just Jazz Guitar Magazine. Neil C. Young has gained long listed Grammy nominations over the recent years with previous album releases and this year will see the latest release of original material.

Repurposing existing hooks and established patterns, Neil C. Young's 'ReWorks' project generates new music and fresh lines of flight, aiming to draw out disparate angles hiding in the music. Lyrical content is present and correct, but respectfully adjusted, re-sited and not forgotten. This is praxis-focussed Action Jazz, Grunge Fusion, perhaps- and made with a resolutely open mind and a genuine sense of adventure.

Depending on one’s level of interest in the horseless carriage, the initials JDM might well conjure images of a 1996 Toyota Supra RZ - made, of course, for the Japanese Domestic Market…

It’s therefore an appropriate name for a new trio led by Dave Walsh; someone whose love of a good automobile is well-known amongst the musical community. There are many more, however, who know him for his superlative drumming with countless jazz greats, award-winning singer-songwriters, and chart-topping pop acts alike.

Proceeding alphabetically, the J of the trio is guitarist Jamie Taylor - himself a seasoned player who has been heard with some of the finest jazz musicians from either side of the Atlantic. Though proudly Yorkshire based, Jamie’s bop-influenced guitar work is also heard on a regular basis at legendary London venues like Ronnie Scott’s and The Troubadour.

Finally, the fulcrum of any organ trio is the musician behind the console, which brings us to M: the wonderful Martin Longhawn. Martin, who is perhaps best known to jazz audiences for his work with the excellent Svarc/Hanley/Longhawn group, has been establishing himself as a much in-demand pianist and organist over the last ten years. His command of this most difficult instrument is certain to win him many more admirers in the years to come.

Musically, Trio JDM draws inspiration from the great legacy of Jimmy Smith and Larry Young, as extended today by artists like Goldings/Bernstein/Stewart. Nevertheless, this is no tribute act; expect to hear accessible original music alongside material from a wide range of composers and eras.

Trio JDM is:
Dave Walsh - drums
Jamie Taylor - guitar
Martin Longhawn - organ

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.

The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.

NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

-
0161 831 7002, after 5pm Monday-Saturday

Bandini is pure, wild energy on stage. Described as “the bastard son of Tom Waits and Cab Calloway” by The Troubadour in London, he mentions Van Morrison, Dr.John, Tom Waits and The Clash among his main influences, which have brought him to blend jazz, blues, rock and gypsy into a dynamic live show. This, combined with his enigmatic and theatrical stage performances have led Bandini to become one of the most relevant and exciting emerging artists today.

Hailing from Italy, Bandini’s musical influences originally come from his creative family. His grandmother, a former cabaret artist, taught him how to create a stage persona and win the crowd’s attention, while his father introduced him to blues and jazz music and his uncle (singer-songwriter for Chantango) to the art of song writing. After some adventures in the Italian punk-rock scene and a degree in Theatre Performance in Milan, Bandini moved to London and began playing extensively at high profile music venues such as the 100 Club, the Green Note, and The Half Moon where he received critical and popular acclaim. His performances have been described as a theatre show rather than a simple gig.

In 2019 Bandini released his debut album “Barflies” produced by Camelle Hinds (Style Council, Paul Weller) and toured Europe with his band. He’s part of Camden Fringe with his show Barflies Tales for 2 years, gaining a 5 star review “A delightful spectrum of music, humour, funk, soul and love”. In February 2020 Bandini and his band were special guests at Twist and Shout - an immersive touring show with an audience of 2000 people, taking place in Milan, Amsterdam, and Paris. In 2020 Bandini started working with Spiritual Records and released some singles with the label, including the funk track “Straight Up”.

During the pandemic he began to work with the multi-awarded immersive show One Night Records, where he became resident artist in 2022. Artist director Phoebe Stringer describes him as “The best in the business. When he’s on the line up you know you’re going to be in for a hell of an evening!”

Recently, Bandini was selected as best London Act to perform in Trafalgar Square for St.George day by the mayor of London and chosen for X-Factor Italy 2023.

Bandini will be perming at Matt and Phreds with his 4 piece : Marcel JB Dano on Guitar, Luigi Rignanese on bass, Vincent Cudet on drums. Performing original material, favourite blues and jazz standards, some Tom Waits and few Italians numbers.

His coming up new full-length album is scheduled to be released in Spring 2024.

‘“Paolo Fuschi & The Outsiders, ‘This Old World’, loving this. But, then again, I was a massive fan of his previous incarnation as the founding member of the Buffalo Brothers and that quality is still on show here.”  - Craig Charles, Funk and Soul Show, BBC Radio 6 Music

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.

Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.

Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.

Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

We are thrilled that this absolute powerhouse of a band is finally back at M&P’s. The last time they played was September last year… And it was a massive night. Let’s make tonight another one. Bring your dancing shoes!

The Nick Dewhurst Band plays a unique and hugely upbeat mix of Soul, Funk and Pop. Featuring a group of musical friends who all met through the Birmingham Conservatoire and West Midlands jazz scene, you can expect to hear a mixture of the band’s spin on pop tunes from the 80’s through to today.

These musicians are highly trained and massively experienced at what they do, across multiple genres, so having them turn their hands at some popular tunes is truly something amazing.

Expect this horn-heavy band (featuring keys, bass, drums, and vocals) to be playing some great arrangements of big pop tunes by artists such as Basement Jaxx, Moloko, Pink, Stevie Wonder, and lots more! There’s something for everyone.

Equilibrium are an organ trio hailing from West Yorkshire that play a mixture of standard jazz repertoire, as well as some of their own material which fits well within the contemporary jazz idiom.

What sets this trio apart from many is that, instead of a guitarist, they are joined by a great up and coming saxophone player (James Curgenven).

Equilibrium’s music is a combination of its members’ personalities. Lucas Kelly’s compositional background shines through in their more arranged, contemporary pieces, whilst James Curgenven’s love of improvisation plays a huge part in how the each show unfolds.

On the night, the trio will be playing most of their original catalogue along with their favourite standards and contemporary jazz repertoire.
